Abstract:

Sultanate of Oman’s energy requirement and economy is still highly dependent on the fossil fuel sector, which is eventually responsible for their higher per capita CO2 emissions. Hence to reduce Carbon di Oxide emission renewable energy sources are the most promising solution. Due to the availability of very good high-quality roads, cheaper fuel, and the economic status of the individuals in Oman, there was a steep increase in the number of heavy vehicles. Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) harnesses the wind energy from moving vehicles and natural wind sources, which are converted to electrical energy, which is utilized to light the highways during night times. In this project, the feasibility test to place the wind turbine in Ibri Wilayat, the optimal position and height of the wind turbine to harness the maximum wind power are analyzed. Also, the suitable wind turbine blade and its associated components are designed. Based on the analyzed and designed values, the wind turbine power system is developed and tested in real-time. Based on the analyzed results, four 400 W wind turbine systems, 100 Ah battery installed in front of our college and generating energy for 100 W smart street light. This pilot project working successfully and the findings show that Ibri Wilayat highways are the best place to install the wind turbine to harness the wind energy from moving vehicles and natural resources.
